Being a SEO expert, I am constantly hearing clients say that they expect to achieve a number 1 ranking in the search engines for a certain keyword. I usually reply by asking “How do you know that should be your number 1 term?” Let’s set aside the notion that being ranked #1 for any given keyword is relative and varies greatly from searcher to searcher due to factors such as recent search history, physical location, etc. Without first conducting the proper research, how are you going to know what keywords could potentially benefit you the most?
Don’t Build Your Foundation on Quicksand
One of the most important pieces in the SEO puzzle is creating your SEO strategy. Researching your target audience and their search tendencies, monitoring your competition’s site and their search marketing efforts, analyzing your industry’s web presence are all important factors in deciding which keywords will bring highly qualified traffic to your site. If you were to miss one of these steps, you are only hurting yourself. Though there are many elements that factor into optimizing a high performing site, starting with a well-rounded SEO strategy will directly impact the success of your SEO program.
Teach Yourself What You Don’t Know
It’s extremely important to understand that beginning an SEO program is a learning process. Understand who your target audience is and what it is they want from you. You must understand how to communicate effectively with them. Learn about the other websites your audience is using. Learn what motivates them to take action. When beginning work on a new client as a SEO expert, I always start by learning these things about them. It is surprising how many times clients are learning this for the first time too.
The Solid Foundation
After you have taken all of the necessary steps of researching, investigating, and learning about your target audience and where you stand in the search world, your SEO program will be on its way to success. Make an effort to create a solid foundation.
