Is social media marketing a waste of money?

A key question in marketing/advertising these days is how much should a business invest for social media marketing and should a company reallocate marketing dollars from more traditional media (radio, TV, print…) and use that money for social media marketing.

If social marketing can prove it produces a positive ROI , then yes, funds should be allocated to it. Whenever a marketing tactic is profitable, it should be utilized. That is just smart business sense. However, my opinion is that social media marketing is still very much in its infancy and should be used sparingly until superior measurement tools are in place to measure its effectiveness and return on investment .  I also think some advertising agencies are purposely making social media marketing seem far more important than it really is so they have another way to bill clientele. My tip is if your advertising company recommend which you invest money on social media marketing, make sure to ask them for case studies to prove it will provide a return on investment.

Small and medium-size corporations should not employ a social media marketing professional for their marketing teams.Instead, they should have a particular person on their marketing group study social media marketing by buying a few  books. There are a lot of to select from on amazon.com and most are an simple fast read.

Small companies which do not have a marketing staff may need to take into account retaining a part-time social media marketng specialistd to assist them (a couple hrs a week).

The way to determine if the individual knows what they are doing is to ask for case studies and recommendations from otherclientele the social media marketer has completed work for. Make sure to call individuals referrals and ask them if they sense they obtained a return on investment from the social media professional. Was it money will spent or does the reference have no clue what they paid for?

Overall, my belief is social media marketing should solely be used sparingly until precise measurement instruments are in place} to evaluate its effectiveness and return on investment .  Once choosing marketing channels for my clients, social media marketing is only employed as a very small piece of the marketing pie. Financially I would budget a no more than 1-2% of your yearly marketing spending budget for social media marketing.
